Medical film digitizers are employed for a variety of applications, including PACS, mammography CAD, teleradiology, telemedicine, oncology besides others. Medical film digitizers play an important transitory role as digital-to-analogue bridges in radiology. Film digitizers will continue to play a key role in medical imaging systems for many years to come.

DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is the medical image file format standard. It requires special DICOM reading software or viewing software. This is used by hospitals and medical facilities in their PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).
